Keeping New Years Goals

A few weeks ago, I talked about my New Years Resolutions. Apparently, most people fail theirs within the first 2 weeks of January, and I have to admit, that does sound likely to be true. A few days ago, I was definitely questioning myself on some of the goals I set myself.

In fact, I almost gave up on the silly challenge of riding every day this month (RED January). Getting up and persuading yourself to ride when you are already tired, when it is dark and cold, can be a challenging thing. I know I’ve only got myself to blame.

This last week has been particularly challenging. I’ve been out most evenings doing other sports, seeing friends, not to mention that pesky thing called work that takes up most of the day. Once you start to think about it, it doesn’t leave much time to get on your bike.

One of my friends is also doing RED January, although he’s doing Run Every Day. We talked about how difficult it can be to find the time and, we even joked and said that if we missed a day but then did two activities the next day, does it still count? Anything to try and make life easier.

However, with that being said, I’m pleased to say that I’m still going strong on the RED January front. Currently, I’m 16 for 16.

I’ve found planning ahead has really helped. If I know I’m going to be out and about later that day or in the evening, I’ll plan to try and spin my legs in the morning. Or, if the weather is pleasant, I’ve also managed to get out during my lunch break. Similarly, if I’ve not got anything planned for the evening, I’ll perhaps treat myself to an easier morning before work.

While I’m complaining about doing a challenge I’ve set myself and that I’m tired from it. There are some good things about it too. I went out on my road bike last weekend and, I noticed that it seemed easier to push the pedals. I’m sure there was probably a slight tailwind helping me out, but my legs did feel genuinely stronger.

Part of me is pleased that I’ve made it over halfway and, I’m past the typical time frame for New Years Resolutions to fail. However, I’m also really looking forward to the end of the month.
