My Biggest Ride Ever… Completed!

I can’t believe I’ve done it! My main event/ride of 2019, it has been my focus for the last 10 months or so. As most of you know, last weekend, I took part in a cycling event up in Yorkshire, starting in Thirsk and winding its way through the Yorkshire Dales.

I am so pleased with how it went, well mostly. I’ll talk about the specifics in a separate blog post. The weather was pretty good all things considered. Especially when you consider that, at one point, the weather forecast said there would be a high chance of heavy rain and strong winds. Not my idea of fun…

It took me about 6 and a half hours to complete the 102 miles and 5,500 feet of climbing. Some of which were quite tough and, at one point, I thought that I was going to have to get off the bike and walk. Thankfully, I didn’t. I think the main climb was only the second most I’ve climbed in one go, but certainly the steepest. Not to mention the decent on the other side; that was both exciting and scary to go down. Disc brakes would have been welcomed for that part of the route.

I can still remember the overwhelming feeling as I raced down the last 5 km. OK, maybe not raced, but I was pleasantly surprised at how strong I was still feeling after 100 miles or so. My legs felt like I had some good miles still left in them. Maybe all the training I’d done did actually make a difference. Although I still didn’t hit the 100-mile mark while training, the closest I got was about 74 miles. Oh well, whatever I did seemed to work

Another challenge I gave myself for this ride, which has also been successful was raising money for a charity called Debra. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me and help me raise money, I really couldn’t have done it without you all! My target of £500 was absolutely smashed and the grand total was £920! Absolutely incredible. Never did I think that I could hit my original target, let alone almost double it! Thank you, thank you, thank you! If you’d like to make a last-minute donation, that would be incredible. I’ll leave a link at the bottom of this blog post to my JustGiving page.

Overall, it feels pretty incredible to have set out with a target and achieve what I wanted to and more. Now all I need is to plan my next challenge. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

Until next time.
