Don’t lie to me, every cyclist has one… It could be a new bike, a shiny new upgrade or some new kit.
I know I always have a list of shiny new cycling stuff. New bikes come out every year, upgraded components get released and I can’t help but look. But then I think, if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be as interested in bikes as I am.
I’d go so far as to say it’s an occupational hazard when you’re into cycling. I’m lucky enough to own multiple bikes, all of which I love. I love looking after them, keeping them working, clean and ‘happy’. I also like upgrading them.
My hardtail, for instance, hasn’t had much love over the past few months. Until recently, it’s been sitting in the garage with broken brakes and every time I ride it, I think of the things I’d like to do with it. I have a list of components I want to buy for it, new brakes, a dropper post, new groupset, new forks; the list goes on.
Unfortunately, this can all add up pretty quickly. Cycling isn’t a cheap sport and I certainly miss the days when I could get trade prices when working in the industry. All of these upgrades are already on my list, including details such as the price, where I can get it from etc…
My list doesn’t just include new bikes and components. It also includes clothing. After a bit of a clear out of my clothing/kit. I worked out that some of the items were nearly 10 years old. Plus if I kept crashing on my bike then I wouldn’t have many of them left. I think I was down to a single mountain biking jersey at one point.
The problem occurs when you start looking. You see new and exciting items and you discover things you need that you never knew existed before. Then you add them to the list.
What’s at the top of your list?
Until next time.

Black brakes for the Trek, an 11-25 cassette for the Venge, a new set of carbon fiber wheels for my wife… and there’s probably a couple I’m forgetting right now. Chuckle.

That’s a nice list, as you said, I can imagine there may be more items than that.

I miss my trade discount too! Although I buy less gear now so probable save more $$ by NOT working in the industry! 😂

You’re probably right. I remember I used to get my wages, and then they’d pretty much go back into the store.
